About This Item
London: Jonathan Cape, (1986). First UK edition. Uncorrected proof in brick red printed paperwraps and the rare proof dust jacket which differs from the eventual trade one. The proof dust jacket is patterned purple and black (vs. maroon) and priced £9.95 (vs. price-clipped with £10.95 sticker added); front and spine titles are gold (vs pale blue); front flap text begins with "The contemporary passion for self-transformation ..." (vs. "The Counterlife is a novel ..."), and "PROOF ONLY PROVISIONAL PUBLICATION DATE FEBRUARY 26 1987" is printed vertically on rear flap which is a little wider than front one. Few small rubs to paperwraps otherwise near fine in very good or better, lightly rubbed dust jacket with creasing where previously folded. A scarce proof that is rare in the proof dust jacket.
Synopsis
The Counterlife (1986) is a novel by the American author Philip Roth. It is the fourth full novel to feature the fictional novelist Nathan Zuckerman. However, when The Counterlife was published, Zuckerman had most recently appeared in a novella called The Prague Orgy, the epilogue to Zuckerman Bound. It is reported that French director Arnaud Desplechin is working on a screen adaptation of the novel.
