Boards have shelf-wear present to the extremities (boards are chipped and worn to the crown of the spine). Previous owner's name present to the FFEP. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. The first edition from January 1892 excluded numerous events "more especially addressed to adult readers," including two significant ones: Tess's "seduction" by her cousin Alec, and the baptism and death of her baby.
