About This Item
1803. Engraving on laid paper with hand coloring. Measures 12 1/4" x 10 1/8"<br/><br/> This caricature of Brook Watson, Lord Mayor of London in 1796, shows a profile view of him walking with a cane and a wooden leg. While swimming in Cuba at the age of 14, Watson survived a shark attack that resulted in injuries to his right calf, and his left leg being amputated below the knee. Despite this traumatic event in his youth, Watson went on to have successful mercantile, military, and political careers, and was ultimately made a baronet.<br/><br/>
