With numerous full colour chromo-lithograph plates, brightly illustrated title page, and portrait frontispiece of the Rev John Brown.A Presbyterian Scottish minister, this work of John Brown was first published in 1778 in two volumes. The work contains history, chronology, geography, summaries, explanatory notes, and reflections on the Bible, as well as a biography of Brown and both the Old and New Testaments.To the verso of a front free endpaper is an inscription dating from 1906 identifying this volume as at that time the property of the children of the Crossley family, George, Jack and Polly, spending some time with them in South Africa. In the publisher's original full morocco binding. Bumping to extremities. Rubbing to boards, most concentrated at joints. Contemporary owner's inscriptions to verso of front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Some spotting to pages. Plates exceptionally bright. Very Good

The Walter Scott Publishing Co. Ltd, 1111. Hardcover. Good. No Edition Stated. 1123 pages. Red cloth with debossed decorations and gilt lettering. Metal clasp to edge. Black and white illustrated frontispiece. Prize plate stuck to front pastedown. Both hinges mildly cracked, reinforced with brown tape. Binding throughout is firm. Pages have light tanning and foxing throughout. More pronounced to text block edges. Minor creasing to title page and Index page. Text is unaffected. Boards have moderate shelf-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Slight crushing with small splits to spine ends and corners. Cloth is slightly frayed. Gilt lettering is darkened. Faint water staining to both boards causing cloth to be slightly discoloured. Book has a slight forward lean.

Professionally rebacked in full contemporary textured black buckram featuring gilt rules and lettering to the spine, and front board; gilt foredges, three silk ribbon-markers in yellow, green, and blue. Fresh endpapers. Bright, elaborately decorated title page, colour frontispiece, accompanied with one coloured map, and nineteen additional full-colour plates depicting various Biblical scenes; all collated, and accounted for. Text organized into two to three columns with extensive commentary housed in a separate row. Remarkably well-preserved, and professionally rebound the extremities are entirely free of any flaws.
