About This Item

Royal Geographical Society of Australasia, South Australia, 1975. Facsimile Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/Good. preface and introduction by Kenneth Peake - Jones, facsimile pages from Sturt's journal, facsimile reproduction of two pages of Brock's diary entries. Coloured frontispiece, of the painting of Daniel Brock " At Poole's Grave". Endpaper maps, showing Sturt's tracks and discoveries. Pale green coloured cloth covered boards with gilt coloured titles to the backstrip. Illustrated dustwrapper, showing the same illustration as frontispiece with black coloured titles to the front panel and black and white coloured titles to the backstrip. This book was not intended for public release, it was a son's diary written day-by-day for his mother. The tone of the work is at variance with Sturt's own publication, being enthusiastic, grief stricken, angry, fearful and frustrated by turns (as opposed to the impersonal and unemotional publication by Sturt). Though factually correct in most particulars of the journey "... his sensitive observation, warm sympathy for the natives, and remarkable command of language provide a picture whose vividness Sturt's official account can seldom match." -- from the front fold of the panel blurb. Rubbing of the lower book edges and there is faint fading of all edges of the book. Light age toning of the text block edges and pages. Rubbing of the dustwrapper edges and panels with fading of the back strip and the left hand edge of the front panel. First edition of the work in this format and binding, and/or set or series. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. [5], VI - XXI, 46 - 222 pages,. Please refer to accompanying picture (s). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Exploration; Diary; Australia; 19th century; History. ISBN: 0909112002. ISBN/EAN: 9780909112004. Inventory No: 0288441. . 9780909112004
