Berlin: Josef Altmann Verlag, 1926. Hardcover. Limited first edition. Original publisher's marbled boards and vellum spine with gilt lettering. Small folio. 75 unpaginated pages [+ 14 page booklet]. Text in Hebrew, booklet in German. This copy features hand coloring of 10 of the facsimiles, done in an expert fashion to mimic the style of early European book image coloring. We have never seen this in any copy and can find no reference to this in any other copyTop edge gilt. A high quality facsimile of the original text and woodcut illustrations of Gershom Kohen's Prague Haggadah of 1527. High quality 14-page booklet laid in at front, which serves as a German-language forward and commentary to the text, giving context and history to the publication. The first publication in the "Monumenta Hebreica et Judaica" series. With the stamped bookplate of "MAX-MARTIN NATHAN Hamburgensis" (ie. "of Hamburg") on the flyleaf, in which a compas and a draftsman's square form a star of David. Our colleague Katalin Meiwes notes that, "In his fiction "Jacobs Leiter" Steffen Mesching has bought books originally owned by Max-Martin Nathan." Laid in is a gift-presentation card from "Elkan Hirsch und Frau;" We find on geni.com (and elsewhere online) an Elkan Hirsch of Hamburg who died there in 1942, so we presume a connection. Light shelfwear, binding split starting at top of inside hinge, wine-spotting on 2 appropriate pages. Very Good Condition solid and attractive, rare as a beautifully hand-colored example. (Hag-4-3A).
