About This Item

Boston: Rogers and Fowle, for Samuel Eliot, 1744. Very Good. Boston: Printed by Rogers and Fowle, for Samuel Eliot in Cornhill, 1744. First Edition. Octavo; modern blue wrappers, upper cover title in calligraphic manuscript; 54,[2]pp. ([*]2 a2 B-G4, collated complete with half title and final blank). A Very Good, fresh and sound copy. From the title page: "N.B. The Things passed over for Want of Time, when the Sermon was preached, are inserted in their proper Places."

Election Day sermon delivered by Congregationalist minister the vocal opponent of Jonathan Edwards and the First Great Awakening Charles Chauncy (1705-1787). A supporter of the Patriot cause during the American Revolution, Chauncy's writing even at this early date is suffused with democratic sentiment: "But possibly, it will be further urged, does not GOD, sometimes take Occasion, from the Labours of Men of small Parts, and little Learning, to serve the Ends of his own Kingdom? And if GOD approves of Persons of such a Character, why should not we?" (p. 17).
