Akademik yaşamı boyunca uzun yıllarını Türkiye'de Bizans sanatı konusunda araştırmalarla geçirmiş olan Profesör Robert Ousterhout, yirmi beş yılı aşkın süredir Kapadokya bölgesinde çalışmaktadır. 1994-1998 yılları arasında Çanlı Kilise ve çevresinde gerçekleştirdiği kazı ve yüzey araştırmalarının sonuçlarını derlediği, A Byzantine Settlement in Cappadocia başlıklı kitabı 2005 yılında yayımlandı. Türkçe çevirisi GABAM tarafından gerçekleştirilmiş olan Visualizing Communities: Art, Material Culture, and Settlements in Byzantine Cappadocia kitabı ise, son yıllardaki çalışmalarının bir ürünü olarak 2017 yılında yayımlandı. Ousterhout bu kitabında, çoğunlukla tekil yapılar, duvar resimleri ve izole yerleşmeler olarak ele alınmış olan Kapadokya bölgesini, toplulukların maddi kültür yaratılarına odaklanarak, tarihsel, çevresel ve iklimsel süreçleri, inanç sistemlerini ve gündelik yaşantıları da göz önünde bulundurarak bütüncül bir yaklaşımla incelemekte, bölgede yaşayan toplulukları bir bakıma "gözle görülebilir" kılmaktadır.
