About This Item
F. Halma. unbound. very good(+). Portrait. Engraving. Image measures 13.75" x 9".

Portrait of Georg Eberhard Rumpf (1627-1702), 18th century. Rumpf was a German born botanist, naturalist and author. He was employed by the Dutch East India Company which sent him to present day Indonesia to catalog exotic botany. Rumpf is known for his "Herbarium Amboinense" which lists over 1200 species of exotica. The naturalist overcame myriad hardships including fires that destroyed his manuscripts, storms, personal family losses and blindness, but he persevered and this scientific work was published posthumously in 1741. Margins are cropped. This is one of hundreds of portraits of scientists that can be found in the Gallery.
