London: Printed [by Harding and Wright] for W. Clarke and Sons et al., 1812. xii, 702 [+ 702a, 702b], bound in full calf with panelled boards and red leather spine labels gilt. A good copy of the first volume needing a drink of leather preservative following saddlesoap to labels. The copy in hand has extremities that are scuffed lightly and a hairline crack in upper joint near the head. Label lettering is bright where not clogged with dirt, top edge very dirty. Endsheets and blanks (one each fore and aft) are original and sound but are heavily foxed, as are titlepage and terminal leaves; scattered foxing throughout the textblock. Small splash-stains affect text edges, and textblock faintly yawns. Bottom corner of page 5-6 has a triangular chunk torn away, not affecting text. Barest hint of musty smell when pages are fanned. Interesting text, and a potentially good copy even with these drawbacks if soaped and otherwise attended to.
