New York: The Vanguard Press,, 1929. Octavo. Original bright green cloth, yellow lettered spine and front cover, top edge yellow. With the dust jacket. Nicks and chips to jacket with large portion torn from head of spine, otherwise a very good copy. First edition, fifth printing, of this entertaining exposé of the "powder-burnt labyrinth of Chicago crime" (as the author puts it on page one), detailing the rackets of such mob luminaries as Al Capone, Dion O'Banion and the Genna family; there is, of course, a chapter on the St Valentine's Day Massacre. Sullivan had been a newspaperman in New York and Chicago, eventually becoming sports editor on the Chicago Herald Examiner. Rattling the Cup and its sequel Chicago Surrenders (1930), both "offered gutsy vignettes on organized crime in Chicago" (Kreike & Jordan eds., Corrupt Histories, 2004, p. 220). The superb Deco jacket design shows cops and toughs in profile.
