Description:
MP3 Audio CD. The Satyricon I THE SATYRICON. Heinsius and Scaliger derive the word from the Greek, whence comes our English word satyr, but Casaubon, Dacier and Spanheim derive it from the Latin ‘satura,’ a plate filled with different kinds of food, and they refer to Porphyrion’s ‘multis et variis rebus hoc carmen refertum est.’ The text, as we possess it, may be divided into three divisions: the first and last relate the adventures of Encolpius and his companions, the second, which is a digression, describes the Dinner of Trimalchio. That the work was originally divided into books, we had long known from ancient glossaries, and we learn, from the title of the Traguriensian manuscript, that the fragments therein contained are excerpts from the fifteenth and sixteenth books. An interpolation of Fulgentius (Paris 7975) attributes to Book Fourteen the scene related in Chapter 20 of the work as we have it, and the glossary of St. Benedict Floriacensis cites the passage… Read More

New York: Privately Printed. Near Fine in Good dust jacket. 1930. Limited/Numbered Edition. Hardcover. Slight abrasion to head edge of front pastedown. Slightest rubbing to spine ends. Ink stamp to rear endpaper. Lacks the publisher's slipcase. Dust jacket chipped at head and tail edges, split along spine, but together in a paper-backed mylar jacket.; This is Gaius Petronius Arbiter's classic satire of the extremes of amoral 'bro culture' in ancient Rome. Copy 625 of 1200 of this edition, "privately printed" during a time of US censorship. The origins of the text are vague, but are believed to be the work of Gaius Petronius Arbiter, Roman Emperor Nero's advisor on matters of taste, fashion, luxury, and extravagance. This book is his satirical retelling of the self-indulgent extremes of immoral living. The manuscript was fragmented, not contiguous, and there are only assumptions about what fragments may be missing and how they linked the known fragments. This… Read More

Description:
Liveright, New York: 1932., 1932 8vo. 269p. DJ. The vivid, elegant, and mildly erotic Satyricon is usually attributed to Nero's friend, Gaius Petronius Arbiter. The surviving portions of the text detail the misadventures of the narrator, Encolpius, and his lover, a handsome sixteen-year-old boy named Giton. Throughout the novel, Encolpius has a hard time keeping his lover faithful to him as he is constantly being enticed away by others. Encolpius's friend Ascyltus (who seems to have previously been in a relationship with Encolpius) is another major character. It is one of the two most extensive examples of the Roman novel, the only other being fully extant Metamorphoses of Apuleius, which is quite different in style and plot. It is also extremely important evidence for the reconstruction of what everyday life must have been like for the lower classes during the early Roman Empire. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W121 Language: eng.
