A cab was a horse-drawn hansom cab, and Romney's favorite mode of transportation was the bicycle. Romney Pringle was a rogue, a man who lived by his wits --- no Robin Hood, certainly! But he was not vicious, and his victims were con-men, thieves, and the like. There is a tongue-in-cheek type of humor in these stories, so lacking in the usual crime story.
