Brattleboro: Brattleboro Typographic Co, 1837. Third (?) ed. Thick quarto (27cm). Contemporary gilt panelled calf, marbled endpapers and page edges; vi,[7]-1275,[5]pp; engraved frontispiece, extra-title, and 22 inserted leaves of plates on thick paper, engraved on both wood and steel, of which four are maps. Two leaves of plates are printed on pink stock. Numerous vignette woodcut text illustrations. Front joint cracked through but holding; faint crazing to leather on spine; scattered foxing and soil; complete and quite Good. Compendious Bible dictionary assembled by Rev. John Newton Brown (1803-1868), a New Hampshire Baptist minister best remembered as the compiler of the New Hampshire Confession of Faith (1833). Of the current work, DAB states that though "...it has been superseded by later and larger works...for a time it was used widely." A quite lovely early American publisher's binding (binder not identified). RINDERKNECHT 43439, noting further editions in 1835, 1836, 1838 and 1839.

Each volume is illustrated throughout with 64 illustrations, many in full colour. A fine, clean set which have been finely bound, by Zaehnsdorf of London, in full green, brown and blue morocco. Spines with raised bands, each with gilt piping along the ridge. Compartments ruled and lettered in gilt. Boards with single gilt ruled borders, the front boards all with the book title stamped within a decorative border, all in gilt. Original decorative endpapers bound in. The inner boards edges have elaborate gilt decoration. All edges gilt. Housed in a blue cloth covered slip case. A little darkening to the spine of the Book of Delights but overall this is a fine trio, in beautiful leather bindings, of this interesting series of anthology volumes, each containing verse, essays, short stories and quotes. A wonderful presentation.
