Quarter grey buckram with red paper on the boards, rubbed at the corners. Square and firmly bound with toned pages, a few stains at the top edge. The fourth Paul Pine mystery, a classic in the genre.

Square, bound with some reading wear, toned pages. The fourth Paul Pine mystery, a classic in the genre.

Inscribed by the author: "For Tom and Juanita. Best always, Howard." The recipient was Thomas Wakefield Blackburn, an author of western novels, and a writer for both film and television (*Sugarfoot*, *Maverick*, *The Virginian*, *Daniel Boone*, and *Davy Crockett* among others). Hardboiled detective Paul Pine is called upon to save an old lady from a blackmailer. Fourth and final Paul Pine mystery written by the author using his real name (he wrote three other Pine mysteries as John Evans) and considered by many to be in a class with Raymond Chandler's later works. Very scarce signed.

Octavo, cloth backed boards. Signed inscription by Browne to a mystery bookseller; "For--- / whom I tolerate only because / he's a bookseller / Howard Browne / 4/16/88." Signed again on the title page by Browne. Also a short typed note dated 1982 from Browne is laid in, declining an invitation to the BoucherCon and saying he is working on a new book to be titled Pork City (St. Martin's, 1988). The next to last Paul Pine novel, this one published under his own name, thought by some the best of the series.
