The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club was Charles Dickens' first novel. It was a publishing phenomenon at the time (1836) and remains a best-seller. It was written as a serial and is a collection of connected incidents--it's very funny.
This copy was published by Nelson Doubleday's Dodd Mead & Co in 1944.
5 2/3" x 8 1/2", 687 pages.
The cover has yellowed a little and there are some scuff marks on the spine.
But It was never read; it has not been opened. The spine is so tight that I could only slip the phone into it enough to grab the photos you see here. The paper is white, clear and unmarked.

A very handsome copy, bound from the original parts by Bayntun-Riviere in early 20th century full crushed blue morocco, with top edge gilt, gilt portrait of Dickens on the front board, vignette of Dickens' autograph to the rear board, gilt spine compartments, gilt borders, and dentelles, and marbled endpapers. Original wrappers for all 19 parts bound in at rear, with a great number of other advertisements, mostly for the later parts. Mild offsetting to the front board, and the spine gently faded to a paler blue, though the gilt remains bright. One corner nicked. Contents remarkably bright and fresh, with one repaired tear to the engraved title page. No evident foxing. Overall in very near fine condition. Mixed issue, as just about always. 43 inserted illustrations (including the frontispiece), chiefly by Phiz. One spot of offsetting on the first couple leaves, otherwise quite clean internally. The book complete and entirely unrestored. Collating [xvi], 609, [1], complete with half title and 43 inserted plates. A few of Hatton and Cleaver's first issue points to the later half of text; all plates in the Phiz states and with the later Chapman & Hall imprints. Given that the early parts continued to be reprinted (and corrected) while the later parts were produced, it is common for the cloth-bound (or publisher's morocco-bound copies) to have most of the earlier misprints corrected, as here.
