Vol III- xix + pppp380 with 1 page directions to the binder. All 3 Vols in full contemporary mottled calf with faded gilt to spines. Vols I and II have small splits side of spine. All vols have a little shelf wear and chipping to top and tails of spines. Inside all volumes are in excellent clean and bright condition with Vol III's front hinge is beginning to crack, but binding holding well. A nice 3 volume set. An anonymous critique of Dalrymple's 'Memoirs of Great-Britain & Ireland from the Dissolution of the Last Parliament of Charles II,' printed as volume 1 in 1771. This is the only edition. Dalrymple's "cunning," the author says, "Lend[s] a lie the confidence of truth." The Memoirs, purportedly relying on previously undiscovered documents, placed Lord Russell and Algernon Sydney in an unfavorable light. The final xx pages print letters supporting the pamphlet, "From the Public Advertiser. March 5, 1773," and a "List of books printed for J. Almon." ESTC T12257.

The 4th Baronet Sir John Dalrymple ((1726-1810) was a Scottish advocate and a co-founder of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. A friend of David Hume and Adam Smith; nonetheless Hume was dismissive of his research. Another assessment: "The appendixes to his chapters contain a mass of previously unpublished political correspondence of first-rate importance on which he based his work. His first volume caused much stir for it revealed the extent to which English politics, in the reign of Charles II, had been influenced by French intrigues..." These are the two volumes of the Second Edition (stated). Although held by the better research libraries, this is not a common title in the Trade. Rebacked in calf with the original tree-calf boards. Externally, generally smart, though with some slight wear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, though with some scattered foxing throughout (heavier to first and last few pages). Missing pages (i-xii) of volume II. Good

Two volumes bound as one: Preface (with Errata), Review and Part I paginated viii, 59, 232; Part II paginated 1 - 210. 4to. Handsomely bound in full contemporary polished calf. The leather boards show a few spots of scuffing (which could probably be polished out). The spine is heavily ornamented in gilt. The endpapers appear to have been renewed some time ago: they are tight and unmarked. Contents exceptionally clean, with very little foxing. Overall, a very nice presentation in excellent condition. Sir John Dalrymple (1726-1810) was a Scottish advocate, judge, chemist and author. He is best known for this work, first published in 1771. He was educated at Edinburgh and Cambridge universities and admitted to the Faculty of Advocates (Scottish Bar) in 1748. Volumes I and II are second editions, with volume III being a scarce first edition. Dalrymple originally wrote the first two volumes in 1771 and 1773 respectively. The two volumes to this set are second editions, published in the first year of publication. Several years later, in 1778, Dalrymple penned a continuation volume. This volume is noted to the title page as being 'Volume II' despite its intentions to be a third volume. Volumes I and II finish at the Sea Battle off La Hogue and volume III continues from this point until the Siege of the French and Spanish fleets at the Battle of Vigo Bay.
