London: John Murray, 1882. Second edition? (Fifteenth Thousand).. A tight, bright and clean copy in near fine condition.. Pp. x, 519, some text-figures. Later one-half black leather over marbled boards bordered in gilt, spine with four raised bands bordered by gilt panel lines, lettered in gilt in two compartments and with gilt designs in the other three compartments, dark blue endpapers, sm 8vo. Described as 'second edition' on the dedication page while p. [iv] has advert for 15th thousand of this work. Freeman no. 38. The half-title page was not issued for this edition and includes the 1845 preface and 1860 postscript to the preface. From the research collection of herpetologist Lauren E. Brown with his signature on the front blank endpaper.

His books were widely read by specialists and the general public, and his influence had been extended by almost continuous public debate over the past 150 years. His most well known works are The Origin of Species, The Descent of Man and Voyage of the Beagle.
