Description:
Birmingham; The Classics of Medicine Library; 1988.. Special Limited Facsimile Edition; Super Royal 4to; pp. ix, [1], 128, [4]; marbled endpapers, 28 full page illustrations two of which are folding and several in full colour, original maroon full leather binding, three raised bands, title lettered in gilt on spine, gilt stamped decoration on front and back boards, all edges gilt, sewn in silk ribbon bookmarker, fine copy. Together with the 38 page booklet "Notes From The Editors". The first edition of 1491of The Fasciculus Medicinae, it is important as one of the initial formal gatherings of medical knowledge of its period, however inaccurate that information may be by today's standards. The illustrations however are the first realistic illustrations to a medical book and are among the best woodcuts of the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. The text provides advice to physicians on prognosis from urine, techniques of bloodletting, obstetrics and wound treatment, etc.
