The book recounts the adventures and discoveries made by the expedition as they explored the river and surrounding lands, encountering rapids, wildlife, and indigenous peoples along the way. The book is written by Frederick Samuel Dellenbaugh, a member of the expedition who served as an artist and topographer.

This account of the second Powell expedition is a reprint of the 1962 Yale edition and includes all 50 illustrations and a substantial foreword by William H. Geotzmann. One of the seminal books on western history. The author was only 17 when he began the expedition, and he hero-worshiped Powell all his life. Yet this bright, sharp account is so detailed and truthful that the reader can see through his enthusiasm to discover Powell's mean spirit and sometimes reckless nature. It's also a great river-running book.

Dellenbaugh (1853-1925) served as Artist & Assistan Topographer of this Expedition. He was a young man under twenty years old then, but had already acquired the discipline of keeping daily journals and became the adventure's unofficial chronicler. This account was written some forty years later from his field notebook. Excellent supplement to Powell's account(s), and a virtual handbook for modern adventurers bent on shooting the dangerous rapids of the Colorado. Strong copy w/a tired soft cover.
