Description:
Philadelphia, 1835. Hardcover. Good. Original maroon cloth with original spine labels. A bit worn and shaken, but quite acceptable given the original binding. First American edition, printed around the time of the London. More Fanny Kemble journals would follow. Already an acclaimed English actress, this account is of the first year of her four-year stay in America beginning in 1832. Kemble “freely though good-naturedly criticized various American customs. The young republic was touchy, however, and for a time she was roundly abused.” (DAB). A year before publication she married Pierce Butler, a South Carolinian and slave holder. They proved a poor match.

Description:
Philadelphia: Carey Lea & Blanchard, 1835. First US Edn. 8vo,pp. 252 + adv, 218 + adv. Untrimmed in original muslin with worn paper label. Spine faded and some foxing, front cover of volume one separate, name stamp on front pastedown, a good set. Howes B-1051, Robinson pp 240-41. This edition does not have the 2 page introduction that is seen in the British issue. Butler is best known by her maiden/stage name under which she wrote a number of plays, acted on both sides of the Atlantic and wrote her Journal of a Residence on a Georgia Plantation (1863). Robinson calls this an uncomfortably gauche work whose indiscretions offended several prominent Americans, and which the English public quite adored. Butler recounts her travels around the east-coast of America pursued by a number of smitten suiters.
