Frances Anne Kemble, better known as "Fanny" Kemble was a 19th-century British actress who, after traveling in the United States, published a number of written works describing her travels. Her best work, and notably most popular, is her 'Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation.' In this work, which was published during the American Civil War, Kemble notes her experiences and observations of slavery on a southern plantation in the late 1830s.

Two volumes bound in one, publisher's black half morocco with matching corners. An account of the popular actress's year after leaving her husband, a wealthy Georgian plantation owner who ultimately divorced her. A 2-3/8" x 3-1/2" albumen photograph of Kemble is pasted to the verso of the front blank, and tipped to the verso of the rear endpaper is an uncommon AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by Kemble to "My dear young Lucy" on "the order of nature for a pretty young girl to be bestowing flowers on an elderly woman."

First American edition, printed around the time of the London. More Fanny Kemble journals would follow. Already an acclaimed English actress, this account is of the first year of her four-year stay in America beginning in 1832. Kemble “freely though good-naturedly criticized various American customs. The young republic was touchy, however, and for a time she was roundly abused.” (DAB). A year before publication she married Pierce Butler, a South Carolinian and slave holder. They proved a poor match.

The journal begins on August 1, 1832 departing England for an American theatrical tour, and ends in July 1833 at Niagara Falls. Published soon after the British actress's marriage to wealthy Philadelphian Pierce Mease Butler, whom she met on the tour. Not until the Civil War did she publish her Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation describing slave conditions on an 1838-39 visit. Covers preserved in clear, removable archival sleeves.
