There are losses from the cloth at the ends of the spine. The deepest losses measure 1/2 inch deep. There are two long splits in the cloth along the rear joint, which measure 3 and 1/2 inches long. The underlying boards are exposed occasionally along the edges. The hinges are weak. The text block is cracked at the beginning. The rear endsheet has a couple of cracks along the hinge. The longer crack is 6 inches long. The pages are yellowed. Several pages have very small light stains. All plates present. This item may require extra shipping charges due to weight. The cloth on each board is slightly rippled and rolled at the edges.

Ex-library, with only a few traces of library markings. There is a brief notation on the front pastedown. The edges of a few of the pages are very subtly moisture stained. The majority of the pages are clean and bright. Between 1871 to 1879, under the jurisdiction of the chief of Engineers of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Lt. George M. Wheeler led an expedition to survey the territory west of the One Hundredth Meridian. The survey's main purpose was to create maps of the area for the establishment of future roads, to record natural resources and to document the Native American tribes of the area. The expedition covered much of the western United States including: New Mexico, California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming and Texas.

The covers are gently rubbed. The corners of the covers are bumped. There is a 2 inch long split in the front board along the joint, at the foot of the spine, and there is a 1 inch long split in the joint at the head of the spine. There are several small light stains on the covers. The edges of the text block are heavily foxed. There is as former owner's name stamped in ink on the top edge of the text block. There are 1/4 inch losses from the ends of the spine. The hinges are weak, and the text block is cracked at the center. The pages are browned. The pages at the beginning and end are lightly foxed. May require extra postage due to weight. Subjects include Carnivora, Primordial Period, Subcarbonferous Period, Eocene Testudinata, and more.

These volumes were custom bound for the owner in three-quarter black leather (the owner's name is embossed in small letters at the bottom of the spine). The books were stored in a basement for years. This was in a dry climate, but still resulted in some damage to the paper covering the boards. The leather spines and corners are "fine". Volume two has just a bit of moisture wrinkling at the top of the center pages. Otherwise the contents are "fine", and appear to be unread. All plates & maps are present. The set looks wonderful on the shelf. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall .
