Original theatre programme for "Gas Light" by Patrick Hamilton for the week commencing 17th July 1939. Colour printed cover illustration by Tom Purvis. Includes cast list and period advertisements. Good condition with abrasion where programme seal has been removed and some browning. Gas Light premiered on 5 December 1938 at the Richmond Theatre in London, before transferring to the Apollo Theatre on 1 January 1939, and to the Savoy Theatre on the 22 May 1939. This is an early provincial production.

Text of the play which was later produced as feature films, the first in 1940, then again in 1944 which was directed by George Cukor starring Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman.

Basis for the 1940 British film starring Anton Walbrook, followed by the better-known 1944 film noir directed by George Cukor and starring Ingrid Bergman. Near Fine in self-wrappers with light glue-darkening around the bookplate, and brief edgewear. In a custom green cloth clamshell box. The Dark Page I: 1940-1949, p. 128.

The play was the basis for a famous 1944 film version which starred Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman (an Oscar winning performance). It also marked the first screen role for the young Angela Lansbury, who was nominated for an Academy Award. An English 1939 film was suppressed by MGM so as not to interfere with this production. The title “Gaslight” has become a popular term to describe an intentional scheme to drive a victim into paranoia.
