Julius Mordechai Pincas, dit Jules Pascin, est un des plus importants artistes de L'Ecole de Paris. Il arrive en France en 1905, année de naissance du fauvisme au Salon d'Automne. Influencé un temps par le fauvisme, puis le cubisme, il est surtout célèbre pour ses peintures des nuits montmartroises. En 1920, il s'initie à la gravure avec Daragnes et prend pour modèles, outre sa femme Hermine David et sa maîtresse Lucy, des prostituées rencontrées dans les maisons closes, dont il couvre des carnets entiers.

Printed by Oscar Brandstetter in Leipzig and illustrated with photolithographs after drawings by Julius Pascin. One of an edition of 100 copies bound in natural goat skin by H.Fikentscher in Leipzig. Overall size c.9. x 7.1/8 inches c.23 x 18 cm. 94 pages, 35 illustrations.Text in German. Binding very slightly spotted, internally fine. A very good copy. The first book with these illustrations was published by the Pan-Presse in 1910.

Berlin: Paul Cassirer, 1910. Limited First Edition Thus. Vellum. Near Fine. No. 46 of 60 on Imperial Japan (Japan vellum), and a total limited edition of 310 copies. Large 4to. 31.5 by 24 cm. 83, [2] pp. With 35 lithographic plates, six of which are hand-colored, and nine of which are signed by Pascin. Also signed by him on the limitation page. The cover also has a partly colored illustration by Pascin done on the vellum. This book was Pascin's first book project. The satirical Heine novel, first published in 1833, actually was the inspiration for Wagner's "Der Fliegende Hollander" or "The Flying Dutchman". Pascin was born in Bulgaria, was active in Paris for much of his career, although becoming an American citizen and working in the U.S. as well.
