The Story of Little Black Sambo was first published in 1899 as part of the Dumpy Books for Children from the publisher Grant Richards. Spiral-bound pages in original color-illustrated pictorial boards. . 6 x 8 in. . With seven full-page color illustrations by Wehr, each with movable, tab-activated elements. This copy has all seven movables (in contrast to later editions with fewer). A fine copy, scarce in this condition. Helen Bannerman (1862 – 1946) wrote The Story of Little Black Sambo in 1898 to entertain her daughters while traveling in India, where the family lived for thirty years while Bannerman's husband worked in the Indian Medical Service. The original Sambo story portrayed its protagonist as a South Indian boy, and Bannerman's follow-up books (including Little Black Mingo) also reference the landscape of the Indian subcontinent (Jeyathurai). Illustrated with color drawings on each facing page and with four "animated" pages of moveable cutouts. Very good, light even soiling to the covers. Edges of the text lightly embrowned. All parts of the four moveable "animated" pages are complete and in working order. The scarcest version of "Little Black Sambo" particularly with the movable parts present, intact, and working; we have not encountered another.

Garden City Publishing , 1933. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Very Good. Illustrated in color with twenty-seven full page illustrations, plus endpaper illustrations, by Kurt Wiese. These includes 4 movable plates with jointed characters operated by tabs. These "animations" were created by A. V. Warren. This book is in remarkably well preserved condition. There is an inscription to Paul Rohe (my father) from his elementary school teacher in Winslow, AZ dated Xmas 1933 in pencil on the front fixed endpaper. There is some minor chipping to the edges of the paper of the paste-on front cover, a minor bump to one corner, with light soiling and fingerprints to the rear board and a few pages, otherwise very clean & bright. All the moving parts are present and in working condition with no creases or tears. In stock, ready to ship now from Evanston, IL!
