Beautifully, boldly signed and inscribed "Inscribed especially for Lucky Millendes with administration for his happy music--- Sincerely-- Langston Hughes New York July 20th, 1948 " on front free endpaper. This copy is full of drawings by Edward McKnight Kauffer. Hughes first collection of poetry after settling permanently in Harlem, where he would become known as "Harlem's Poet Laureate". Shakespeare in Harlem is a garland of verses about the "dream deferred" to which Lorraine Hansberry refers in Raisin in the Sun. Various characters weave in and out of his verses, as Hughes ponders the life that pours through the streets, bars and tenements around him. Dust jacket's spine missing 1/4 inches on top margin. In very good condition.

Octavo. 124pp. Near fine with sunning along the spine and two miniscule marks on the front board in about good or better dust jacket with chipping on the spine and front flap, tear on the rear flap and some general edgwear. Inscribed in Hughes' hand just two months after publication: "Inscribed especially for Dorothy Elvidge, with the sincere regards of - Langston Hughes Chicago, April 27, 1942." Elvidge was the comptroller of the Rosenwald Fund, which granted fellowships to numerous African-American writers, artists and intellectuals from the late 1920s to the late 1940s, including to Hughes. He later wrote the story "Simple and the Rosenwald Fund," which lamented its demise. An interesting association.

Embree, with the sincere regards of Langston Hughes. Chicago, February 24, 1942." Drawings by E. McKnight Kauffer. Book has black and orange cloth boards. Slight fading of orange at top and bottom of spine. Dust jacket, with price intact, has a long 1/8-inch shallow chip across top front, edgewear and small corner chips. ALSO laid in is a 5x8" one-page poem "The Negro Speaks of Rivers" by Hughes. Signed and dated 1941 by Hughes on the front. On the verso he has writen "Twenty Years Writing and Publishing -- June 1921-June 1941". This is the first separate publication of the poem and it is printed on orange card stock with illustration at top by Aaron Douglas. It is one of 250 copies Hughes had printed in 1941 and sent to friends and is now rare. Not available for international shipping. Stated first edition.
