Paris: R. De Castro Maya,, 1954-55. Artworks of Brazilian life not included in his official account First and sole edition, limited issue, number 82 of 400 copies. The finely produced plates are after drawings and watercolours by the French artist Jean-Baptiste Debret: his oeuvre documents Brazil in the early decades of the 19th century. While relatively well represented institutionally, Debret's work is commercially scarce. Debret (1768-1848) studied at the French Academy of Fine Arts under the great Jacques-Louis David, travelling to Brazil in 1816 as a member of a French Artistic Mission commissioned by João VI of Portugal. He created an arts lyceum in Rio de Janeiro, the Escola Real de Artes e Ofícios, which later became the Academia Imperial de Belas Artes during the reign of emperor Dom Pedro I.
