Dampstaining along bottom third of boards, echoing through the bottom portion of text block with bleeding to preliminaries, though interior text largely unaffected. A hardcover book handsomely bound in full polished calf with gilt decorations on the spine, marbled endpapers, gilt foredges, and gilt dentelles. The spine is almost undetectably age-toned. Foxing on plates and endpapers. Small closed tear on the plate between pages 18-19 has been delicately repaired. A tiny hole in the side margin of page 23 has been similarly repaired. Apart from some small age-related blemishes, the main text is unmarked. A previous owner has neatly handwritten the page numbers for the Notes section in back. The binding is sturdy and secure. This is the first edition, first state, with 20 hand-colored plates. Tooley 331.
