James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938) was a writer, educator, lawyer, diplomat, and civil rights activist. He is best known for writing the lyrics to "Lift Every Voice and Sing," often referred to as the Black National Anthem, which became a rallying cry for the Civil Rights Movement. Johnson's multifaceted career included serving as a leader in the NAACP, a U.S. consul to Venezuela and Nicaragua, and a professor at Fisk University.

The book is in Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket, but with a slipcase. The slipcase is in good only condition. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition with the exception of a chip with loss of cloth to the bottom spine end (approximately 1/2 depth) . The text pages are clean and bright. The slipcase is missing the whole top edge but is otherwise in Very Good condition.
