No publication date given, circa 1880s, ownership dated 1884 or 1887; originally published in England 1875 as a triple-decker. -- Hardcover, reddish-brown cloth with nice gilt and black decoration. Condition: very good (cover cloth rubbed at tips; last page of text almost free). -- The English-born author (1825-1879) gained recognition for this novel, a "sympathetic and exciting account of Irish life during the Famine" [Feminist Companion]. The Philadelphia publication is held in few libraries.

This is a Very Good (Minus) copy of a the fifth printing of the "New Edition" of 1889. Red c;loth binding, with ruling in black on the front cover, black lettering on the spine. Clean text; 576 pages. Corners are bumped, the spine has faded to orange, and it is shaken due to a cracked front hinge. Please note the condition issue; Quercus must offer this as a Binding Copy, in need of some restoration or repair. . Later Printing. Hard Cover. A Very Good copy; green decorative cloth binding, with black an gilt blindstamping; an English coat-of-arms on the front cover. No publication date is given, but the Tauchnitz copyright edition was in 1875, and there is a gift inscription from 1885 on the second free endpaper. Quercus therefore keeps to the middle and assigns a date of 1880. Clean text; 576 pages, very bright and supple. The corners are bumped; rubbing to the head and foot of the spine.
