He enlisted in the Marine Corps in1948 and was commission as a Second Lieutenant just prior to the North Korean attack of June, 1950. He served in the Fifth Maring Regiment in Korea and was awarded the Navy Cross, Silver Star, and two Purple Hearts. After the war he commanded a Marine Reserve Rifle Company until 1960. He was elected to Congress in 1967 and was reelected seven time.
