Maurice Girodias, the owner of Olympia Press, was not happy with the first translation of HISTOIRE D'O he published in 1954, and commissioned Austryn Wainhouse to prepare a new version which was published in 1957 as THE WISDOM OF THE LASH, and appeared as no. 44 of The Traveller's Companion Series.
