Black embossed cloth, cover art of bee in gilt on front, gilt decorative lettering on spine, lettering & decoration in blind on covers (minor spotting to upper fore-edge, minor dustsoiling), still VG. Early printing of this excellent handbook for the bee keeper. This 1908 edition has been substantially revised and expanded with many new articles, many more biographical references of famed beekeepers, new equipment & techniques, and more. Amos Root (1839-1923) was an intrepid and innovative inventor, marketer, and entrepreneur who founded the Root Company which manufactured beehives and beekeeping equipment, and who improved removable frames so honey could be more easily harvested. The company is still in operation in Medina, OH.

Covers are soiled and lightly bowed, there is a thin 3 / 4-inch chip to the spine, and there is a previous owner's ink stamp on the front free endpaper. Medina, Ohio: The Author. Very Good-. 1891. Early Printing; 52nd. thousand. Softcover. Printed tan wraps. Frontispiece and four other engravings at the front. Illustrated with many other engravings and reproductions from photographs. There is some staining to the cover corners. A 1/2" tear to one upper spine corner. Other staining to the latter half of the text block along the upper edges and down the upper third of the fore edge. This does not actually detract very much from the integrity of the book. There is a long crease to the upper corner of the rear wrap as well as another long diagonal crease to the upper third of the front wrap. Very tight. Very scarce in this original early, softcover edition. ; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 408 pages .
