Hyperion Press, 1941. Limited Numbered Edition. Cloth. Very Good+/Fine Custom Clamshell Box. Hirschfeld, Al. A spectacular Limited Numbered Edition with 24 original lithographs by Al Hirschfeld and signed in the plate by the artist with a beautiful custom clamshell case. Numbered 765 of only 1000 limited edition copies. With a 6-page introduction by William Saroyan. Of the 24 original lithographs, 19 depict Harlem residents, and 6 depect Balinese dancers. All are bright and colorful. The book is in near fine condition but for light soiling and toning to the covers and touches throughout the book. The cloth spine has been professionally repaired and the original spine laid down. The lithographs are all in beautiful condition although the glue on the left margin of some has darkened. The book measures 18" high by 14" wide. The new clamshell box custom made for this book is beautiful with light tan linen accented with dark brown. The spine has gold titling for the title, author and publisher. A beautiful set. Read More

SIGNED and dated 4/16/92 on the half-title by Al Hirschfeld, accompanied by a small self-portrait. Considered by many to be noted caricuraturist and longtime Harlem resident Hirschfeld's greatest work, a collection of 24 vibrant color lithographs capturing the street life and jazz scene of Harlem. About Near Fine, with no dust jacket as issued, lacking the rare slipcase. Faint soil on the board edges, with occasional spots of foxing on the pages and light glue darkening on the lithograph edges as is almost always found. An unusually well-preserved copy.
