This collection brings together 401 letters by the single most influential American writer on the works of other American writers. His short story cycle "Winesburg, Ohio" impacted the future work William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck and Thomas Wolfe.

Two quarto pages (two quarto sheets, each with writing on recto only), on James Boyd's printed letterhead: "The Pilot, James Boyd, Publisher", Southern Pines, North Carolina, and dated May 7, 1943, to "Dear Eleanor". The letter is 19 lines in Boyd's pencil holograph, states, in part: "Here are all of Sherwood's letters that I have. You are most welcome to them of course. I don't know what connection may exist with The University of Penn... All well here & The Pilot making a little money. Love, Jim." The Sherwood Anderson letters referred to are not present here. At one point Anderson's wife Eleanor went of a quest to gather Anderson's letters to write a biography - we have seen similar letters from other of Anderson's correspondents.
