Description:
[New York], 1935. Hardcover. Good. A large collection of medical offprints and monographs, including bound-in and laid-in correspondence and notes, assembled by the distinguished American physician, author, and editor Smith Ely Jelliffe. A practicing neurologist, psychiatrist, and psychoanalyst based in New York City, Jelliffe was a pioneer in the emerging field of psychosomatic medicine, and is best known today as the father of psychoanalysis in America. A prolific author and translator, he edited the influential *Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease* from 1902 to 1944, co-founded the non-orthodox *Psychoanalytic Review* in 1913, and co-founded and edited the *Nervous and Mental Disease Monograph Series*. He maintained a close personal and professional correspondence with both Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung after their historic break, and several other leading figures throughout the world in both Freudian and Jungian circles. Also a book collector, Jelliffe built up an important private library of… Read More

Description:
Vienna, , 1926. 45 folio leaves, each approx. 47 x 20 cm, printed on one side only, versos blank. Printed on acidic paper, with some age-toning, and now enclosed in custom-made mylar sleeves and housed in a cloth drop-box. Freud's pencilled annotations and corrections are more numerous in the first part of the work.Freud's 'Question of lay analysis' is the fullest, most closely argued expression of his strongly-held view that it is not necessary to be medically qualified in order to practise psychoanalysis. It was written in response to charges brought against a non-medical member of the Vienna Psycho-Analytical Society for 'quackery' (treating patients without a medical degree) but it sparked a broader professional debate which would continue for over half a century. Freud and almost all his early colleagues were doctors and, regardless of Freud's own position on the matter, the question of who should be authorised to practise the treatment methods which arose from his discoveries was contentious -… Read More

"Testimonial

It is a well-known fact for everybody who knows psychoanalytical literature that the numerous works of Dr. Theodor Reik about the application of psychoanalysis, especially those concerning religion and ritual, are among the best and most influential in the field, I would say even one of a kind. Whosoever has the opportunity should feel obligated to support Dr. Reik's career and to assist him in order to enable him to continue his work…"

Description:
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1939. Moses and Monotheism is an in depth examination of the characteristics of monotheistic religion as it developed within both the Jewish and Christian faiths. Freud concludes that the legendary figure of Moses was, in fact, and Egyptian and so brought what would become Judaism to Israel from his native country of Egypt. The book was met with great controversy and "delivered a shock to many of his admirers", according to his contemporary Joseph Campbell. Philosopher Mikkel Borch-Jacobsen wrote that in the book Freud applied to history "the same method of interpretation that he used in the privacy of his office to 'reconstruct' his patients' forgotten and repressed memories.

Description:
[Leipzig: Friedrich Dehne,, 1920]. Signed by Freud A striking portrait of the father of psychoanalysis by German-Jewish artist Hermann Struck, signed in pencil by both sitter and artist in the lower margin, numbered lower right 13/150. Freud praised the work as a flattering but "charming idealization", noting Struck's quiet erasure of signs of encroaching age. Struck (1876-1944) drew this portrait from life in 1914; the etching is monogrammed and dated in the plate lower left "HS [star of David] 1914", following the artist's convention. Writing to Struck in November 1914, Freud appeared wryly pleased with the flattering likeness: "This is how I should like to look, and I may even be on the way there, but it seems to me I have got stuck halfway. Everything that is shaggy and angular about me you have made smooth and rounded... You have put my parting on one side... Furthermore my hairline runs across the temple in a rather concave curve. By rounding it off you have greatly improved upon it. Very… Read More

Two light brown spots of soiling at the margins and one inoffensive stain to the ink, with no effect on legibility. Overall in very good to fine condition.. One page, with a personal letterhead. Signed "Freud", dated February 27, 1927. 150 × 226 mm. Sigmund Freud's signed holograph letter to Frau Wolff regarding the treatment of the recipient's daughter at the Berlin Poliklinik. Freud offers to Mrs. Wolff to recommend her daughter to a physician at the Berlin Poliklinik, and he describes the financial details and the schedule of treatment at the Institute. The Berlin Poliklinik was opened in 1920, after Freud's 1918 proposition to create institutions and out-patient clinics where treatment is free. This is one of Freud's greatest achievements and a frequently overlooked contribution to public health reform. .

Description:
Leipzig: Felix Meiner, 1925. First Edition . Soft cover. Very Good/No Dust Jacket. First edition off-print of Sigmund Freud's autobiography, inscribed on the top cover, "Seimen lieben / O. Pfister / Freud / 12.2.25." The book is further inscribed by Pfister on the blank recto of the frontispiece, " Seimen lieben Freunde / Prof. R. Brandt / In herzlicher Gesinnung / Zurich 24.4.55." Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis. Oskar Pfister (1873-1956) was a Swiss Lutheran minister and lay psychoanalyst born in Zurich, Switzerland. He is perhaps best known for applying psychoanalysis to the science of education, as well as a belief system combining psychoanalytic psychology and theology. In Zurich, he was in close intellectual proximity to Eugen Bleuler and Carl Jung. The friendship between Freud and Pfister is well documented, lasting over 30 years and only ending upon Freud's death. Less is known about Professor Brandt,… Read More
