Bound in dark brown calf with gilt detailing and lettering on spines. Boards have cross hatching pattern pressed into leather and gilt border. Moderate wear to spine, moderate bumping and rubbing to head/tail of spine and corners, leather severely cracking and chipping away from boards and edges, all corners reinforced on both volumes and evidence of old repair to top edge of rear board on volume I, both volumes show very light worming, turn-ins with gilt design chipping significantly. Front gutting splitting in both volumes. Red speckled textblock edges, slight warping to textblocks, moderate soiling to exterior of textblocks, off setting from frontice piece on title pages, moderate off setting from plates in both volumes, light uneven foxing throughout, and discoloration to edges of front free end papers. New and improved edition, with critical and explanatory notes by J. R. Planche, Esq. F. S. A. Boards rubbed/edgeworn. Inner hinges tape reinforced. . V. 1: 117 pp of text; Frontis plate, 8 plates in the introduction, and 50 other plates. The plates are choromo-litho color plates and are very vibrant. The plates are out of order but present, and some are detached. Volume 2 has a weak binding and many signatures detached, laid in. It includes plates # 51-143 plus the frontis. The plates are out of order. The plates and pages are in nice condition, but both volumes need rebinding. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall .

New edition with 153 hand-colored engravings. Strutt was an English engraver, and writer on art. BRUNET Vol. 5, p.566, noting earlier edition. BRYAN Vol.5, p.138. DNB notes, "Although the amount of Strutt's work as an engraver is small....it is of exceptional merit and is still highly esteemed." Index of sources from which the illuminations were taken . Interior contents -- text and plates -- bright, clean and fresh. Ex-library with no external marking, ownership signature verso of title pages, and three initials at top corner verso of plates, minor extremity wear.
