Portrait frontispiece reproducing a portrait of the author by Augustus John (to whom the book is dedicated). Top edge spotted and a little dust soiled. Some light fraying and damage to the fore edge of a score or more of leaves where they have been inexpertly cut, and some light partial browning to two adjacent text leaves, suggesting that a clipping was at one time stored between them. A nice crisp copy. Pen portraits of various Spanish, French, English and Irish locations, plus the lengthy 'London: A Book of Aspects'..

Inscribed by Symons on the front free endpaper " To Dora Gordine from Arthur Symons November 14: 1928(?)". A very good tidy copy in publishers beige cloth with dark green label, lettered and with wavy line border, all in gilt, to the spine. Top edge gilt. Dora Gordine was a noted Estonian Sculptor who regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy and Leicester Galleries in London as well as shows at The Fine Art Society & The London Jewish Museum of Art. Symons was a great champion of her work. Reviewing one of her Leicester Galleries exhibitions in a 1938 edition of the Spectator, Symons wrote; 'Her profound sense of pure form in sculpture, heedless alike of realism and of exaggerated abstraction, is united with the subtlest delicacy of modelling, and these qualities combine to endow her bronzes with an abnormal power, an almost uncanny life, which only the sculpture of the greatest civilisations of the past has… Read More
