1936. 1st Edition. Hardcover. New York, First American edition, octavo. Two darkened spots on the spine, otherwise a good copy in chipped at the crown and at the corners, and a small hole on the spine of dj.

London: Faber and Faber, 1936. First printing. Hardcover. Good. 5 x 7 1/2 in. 190 pgs. Turquoise cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Condition is GOOD ; corners and edges lightly worn, cover slightly darkened at edges, spine darkened but gilt lettering very bright. Top edge of back cover is slightly crimped in several places, as if it had a too heavy book on top. Binding solid. Previous owner's (Prof. Victor Lange) name in ink on ffep and book plate on front pastedown. Text is very clean, with a few pencil marks and one note in margins. Front pastedown and ffep slightly foxed. Really quite a nice copy, though I make it sound not so nice in the sake of veracity. Literary Criticism. RG.

Pencil inscription to front free endpaper. Boards have light shelf-wear with corner bumping. Light tanning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends. Tears to cloth to spine edges. Water staining to both boards.

Nef, a noted American historian, author, and founder of The Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. Signed and dated by Nef on the front free endpaper, with a few light marginal pencil annotations in his hand.

Fading of medium blue cloth top and bottom of spine (corresponding to pieces missing from dust jacket) and small stain top of rear paste down; dust jacket with heavy chipping top and bottom of spine (with "and / Faber" of "Faber and / Faber" missing at bottom of spine panel), small chips and short tears top and bottom of flap folds, fading of the pale green paper to almost white on flap folds, and to a paler green on rear and front panels, and spine panel is both faded and substantially darkened. As stated on front panel of dust jacket "This book takes the place of For Lancelot Andrewes, which is out of print. The Essay on Thomas Middleton is omitted because it has already been published in Elizabethan Essays, and other essays omitted because the author does not think them good enough. Five new essays, not previously collected, have been added.". First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Fair.
