The deluxe binding of the 1906 Houghton Mifflin Manuscript Edition in three quarter dark green levant gilt, here with a leaf from a resonant passage in Thoreau's Walden, from a draft of Chapter III, "Of Reading" (here in an undetermined state varying slightly from the final published text, where it appears as pp. 114-6). The manuscript is in ink, with additions in pencil. Shanley notes that the "first draft" manuscript is missing three pages at this chapter and he identifies no other manuscript source for the passage. An absolutely magnificent copy in publisher's brown cloth binding decorated in blind with titles in gilt on spine, with 8 pages of ads at rear dated September, 1854. Near Fine with softening to spine ends, light wear to corners and several faint scratches to the front and rear cover, gilt stamping on spine is very bright and sharp. Abrasions to front and rear paste downs, where at the front it appears perhaps someone tried to efface a former owner's name. One page gathering sits a bit proud in what appears to be a binder's error where sewing was missed at the bottom stab holes. Housed in a custom slipcase. A very fresh and unrestored copy in the original cloth, which has a luster that very few extant copies still retain.

Stacy, Bookseller, Concord, MA." Bookseller John Stacy also served as the librarian to the library housed in back of his store in Concord's Mill Dam business district. The library was owned jointly and used by several shareholders including Ralph Waldo Emerson who served one term as president. John Stacy's son Albert succeeded him in 1850. While the bookseller's ticket states "Sold by" Albert never sold the book in his shop, however when Walden was published, he purchased a copy for $0.75 presumably for the library. In his book, Thoreau writes "One of my greatest luxuries has been in books..., good books I value beyond most all else in the world of earthly treasures, after my family." Includes the map of Walden of between pages 306 and 307. Printed in an edition of under 300 copies, this third edition is exceedingly hard to find, especially so in decent condition. The book is in almost near fine condition. Previous owner's inscription present on the title page (From John S. Browne - E.W.C.) as well as their initials at the foot of pages 200 and 300. Hinges tight and uncracked. Light spotting to the front/back matter. Interior pages are mostly clean with some scattered spotting and soiling. Pages 307 onwards show a light stain to the upper fore edge corners. A few pages were roughly cut along their fore edges. A few signatures are lightly shaken and slightly protruding from the book block. Light edge wear/tear, rubbing, soiling to the cover cloth. Uniform edition of Henry David Thoreau's writings, illustrated with 165 photogravures after nature photographs by Clifton Johnson, who observes of Thoreau: "Each plant and tree had for him a story, though he was more attentive to the wild growths than to the cultivated." This set collects the two books published in the Concord Transcendentalist's lifetime, A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers (1849) and Walden (1854), as well as three volumes published after his death: Excursions (1863), The Maine Woods (1864), and Cape Cod (1865). This set was issued in New York by Crowell and in London by Harrap. The New York edition features a different decorative binding by pioneering book designer Margaret Armstrong for each title, while this London edition is uniform, featuring Armstrong's design for the American edition of Walden on all five volumes.
