Description:
Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott Company, 1960. First edition of Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel which had an initial first printing of 5,000 copies. Octavo, original green cloth backed brown boards, titles to spine in gilt. Signed by both Harper Lee and Truman Capote on the front free endpaper. Truman Capote's friendship with Harper Lee began in the summer of 1929 when the two became next door neighbors in Monroeville, Alabama; both were the age of five. They shared a love of reading and began collaborating when Lee was gifted a typewriter by her father as a child. Lee drew on their friendship as inspiration for the characters Lee and Scout in her masterpiece To Kill A Mockingbird; Capote based his tomboy character Idabel Thompkins in his first novel Other Voices, Other Rooms on Lee. They worked together on Capote's true crime novel, In Cold Blood; Lee acted as his 'assistant reasearchist' and edited the final draft of the book. Upon its publication in 1965, Capote failed to acknowledge Lee's… Read More

New Orleans: Parish of New Orleans, 1924. 1st Edition. New Orleans: Parish of New Orleans, 1924. 1st Edition. First Edition. Truman Capote's original Birth Certificate - issued in the parish of New Orleans & registered the 3rd day of October, 1924 & showing the birth of Truman Streckfus Persons, September 30th, 1924. A unique document. A bit tattered but still quite bright & clean. In 1928, when Truman was 4, the Certificate was given by Capote's mother, Lillie Mae Faulk Persons [soon to be Capote] to her sister, Lucille Faulk Ingram for safekeeping. Lillie Mae was off to New York to make a new life leaving Truman to the care & nurturing of his Monroeville relatives. Outside of the cousins Truman lived with as a child, Lucille Faulk Ingram & her daughter, Cecilia, were his closest kin. As a fledgling writer looking for solitude, it was in the comfort of Lucille Ingram's home that Truman began to write his first novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms.

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1959. First Edition. A very good copy in a good publisher’s slipcase, which has some staining and wear. This is an exceptional association copy, inscribed by both the photographer and author to Kenneth [Battelle], known as the hairdresser to celebrities, Mr. Kenneth. Inscribed by Avedon, “For Kenneth with admiration and affection,” and by Capote, “For Kenneth, an artist, from Truman C.” Kenneth was known for collaborating with contemporary photographers such as Avedon and Irving Penn. He was the favored hairdresser of both Jackie Kennedy Onassis and her sister, as well as others, preparing many for the famous (infamous? notorious? celebrated?) Black & White Ball, the lavish party staged by Capote.

Description:
New York: Random House, 1965. First edition. Near fine in near-fine jacket. First printing of the pivotal true-crime book - signed by Capote, and with the ownership signature of Dorothy B. Hughes, author of the inverted noir masterpiece, IN A LONELY PLACE (1947). Capote wrote IN COLD BLOOD in search of a form that married non-fiction with elements of literary fiction. He researched it in Kansas with childhood friend Harper Lee, whose way with people opened doors in the tense atmosphere. ("She is a gifted woman, courageous, and with a warmth that instantly kindles most people, however suspicious or dour," Capote told Plimpton in 1966.) Writing IN COLD BLOOD, Capote attempted to understand the minds of killers - a trait that Sarah Weinman ascribes to Hughes in the novel IN A LONELY PLACE nearly twenty years before: "She was describing the psyche and actions of a serial killer years before the term existed." A jaw-droppingly great association copy, linking the two writers in the 20th century who most… Read More
