Blue cloth covered boards with silver lettering on spine and design to front. Signed with dedication from the author to Constantin Fitzgibbon on front free endpaper. Pages with some foxing and tanning, particularly to endpapers and textblock edges. Binding remains firm. Small holes and scratches to front pastedown. Slight stains to pastedowns. Some slight creasing and mild tears to page edges. Occasional minor pencil marginalia. Boards have heavy shelf wear with bumping and fraying to corners and crushing and fraying to spine ends. All surfaces heavily tanned, particularly spine. Gilt lettering to spine is dulled but remains brighter on front. Spine has two holes and frayed tears in cloth. A few liquid droplet marks to front.

This book comes from the library of Oliver Joseph St. John Gogarty and was signed and inscribed to him by Arland Ussher on the halftitle in May 1950. A very nice association copy. Percival Arland "Percy" Ussher (18991980) was an Anglo-Irish academic, essayist and translator. Born in Battersea, London, he studied at Cambridge University for some time. In 1926 he published a translation of The Midnight Court (Cúirt an Mheán-Oíche) by the Irish Gaelic-language poet, Brian Merriman. Ussher published The Face and Mind of Ireland (1949) and Three Great Irishmen (1952), a comparative study of Shaw, Yeats, and Joyce. Inscribed and signed on endpaper. Two manuscript letters loosely inserted. Manuscript entry, correction/explanation/annotations by Maurice Headlam to Arland Ussher on page 166 and page 175. Maurice Headlam was the British civil servant in Ireland who was British Treasurer Remembrancer and Deputy Paymaster for Ireland, from 1912, a post due for abolition with Home Rule, and which he held to May 1920.
