Description:
Durham, NC: W. T. Blackwell & Co, 1878. First Edition. Sewn binding. Very good. Octavo, 20pp. About very good in the publisher's pale pink side-sewn wrappers. Wrappers partly perished along the very fragilt spine, with some small insect holes and a few stains. Contents clean. A scarce 19th century North Carolina imprint, which presents the lengthy biographical tribute by the sitting governor, Zebulon Vance, to a recently deceased former governor, David Swain. Swain had been governor in the 1830s, but remained active in North Carolina politics through the end of the Civil War and afterwards. He died in 1868, weeks after being thrown from a horse that had been gifted to him by General Sherman. Thornton 14202. Not in Sabin. Scarce.
