Much of these memoirs are in diary form, pounded out by the Senator nearly nightly. An isolationist at first, the attack on Pearl Harbor changed his view, and this is where his story begins, and continued until his death in 1951. His influence was strong in recognizing Communism, "the Russian menace", in helping to define the United Nations with "the Vandenberg Resolution", and in his final years serving as Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and as Senate President Pro Tempore.
