Description:
1689 1ed Defense of Missionaries Arts anti Jesuit Protestant v Catholic Hickes"A Defence of the Missionaries Arts" is a late 17th-century anti-Jesuit treatise which now serves as one of the best works on the ongoing attacks between Protestants, Catholics, and their denominations. The introductory material of this book perhaps best exemplifies the theological disputes:
"Are horrid massacres, villainous assassinations, or poisonings the effect of charity? ...nothing is more obvious in the whole course of history than those diabolical machinations and hellish conspiracies of priests and Jesuits."
Authors George Hickes and William Wake use direct and pointed language to describe the horrors and evils of the Catholic Church, while at the same time provide ways to readers of defending themselves against Catholic conversion attempts. Interestingly, the work concludes with the phrase "fit to be read by all Protestants," as if there may be any question to whom they were writing.
