Dana Esq. with the best regards of William Cullen Bryant – December 1863. With two photographs of Bryant and Dana side by side mounted to the front pastedown. A wonderful association copy. A published letter from Dana notes the significance of the gift, and he showers praise on Bryant's poems. Mention is made specifically of the poem, The Planting of the Apple Tree, and an autograph signed stanza of that poem is tipped in here. Housed in an open blue cloth slipcase. Some gilt stamping perished, neatly rebacked, with original backstrip laid down, plates a bit spotted, as usual, fore-tips worn, otherwise a good copy. First edition in this format (a reprint, save for the prefatory note "To the Reader," "The Stream of Life," and "The Waning Moon"). Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on a prelim: "To James Lawson Esq. from his much obliged friend The Author Dec. 1846." The recipient, James Lawson (1799-1880), was a Glasgow-born American author, editor, and insurance expert. The binding is worn, cracked at title page. Attached to the rear is a letter signed by Bryant sent to George Harvey dated September 29 1871. Folded half-sheet with a bit of toning around the edges but no tears. Housed in green slipcase. Bookplate on front fixed endpaper. Bryant's third book. BAL 1603.

Boston: Printed by Hilliard and Metcalf, 1821 One of 750 copies. Edited (anonymously) by Richard Henry Dana, Sr. and Edward Tyrell Channing. Originally issued in printed boards. This copy rebound at an early date in full leather with a spine label that reads "Bryan'ts Poems." There is an old inscription in pencil on the front free endpaper, and an early signature (Charlotte Willard) on the first blank page. Scattered foxing and light staining to the pages. The Bryant book is bound with "The Steam-Boat" by the author of "Sir Andrew Wylie" apparently as filler so the thin 44-page "Poems" could be rebound in leather.. First Edition.. Leather. Good.

"Poems" contains Bryant's best-known work, "Thanatopsis," first published in the North American Review in 1817 and revised in 1821 for this collection. Our copy is in the original brown paper over boards. There is some rubbing to the author's name on the front cover affecting the letters ANT in Bryant. Years ago, the spine was covered wih a strip of white paper (now tanned beige). The lower half of this strip has come unglued, showing the worn brown paper underneath. A conservator could possibly remove the paper strip. Our research indicates few copies remain with the original spine intact. Our copy now rests in a red cloth-covered chemise, which is then enclosed in a similar red cloth slipcase. The slipcase has a leather spine with the title "Poems" and author's last name and publication date in gilt, and five raised bands, also gilded; however, the lower bands have lost or are losing the gilt. Bryant's third book, following the extremely rare self-published juvenalia Embargo (1808) and his slim first collection, Poems (1821). This edition contains works from the 1821 Poems - including "Thanatopsis" and "To a Waterfowl" - as well as newer poems. "Most of the following poems have been already printed ... In preparing them for press, [Bryant] has made such corrections as occurred to him on subjecting them to a careful revision" (Preface). A compilation of nine disparately published titles from various publishers (detailed below), which a previous owner bound together roughly contemporary to their publication. There is a list of each book inked at front paste down, dated 1848, only two years following the date of publication of the newest of these books, which so seems likely as the approximate date that the compilation was bound together. Black half-leather, marbled paper boards - scuffed, scratched, with heavy edgewear frayed to boards. Spine rebacked with a fairly unobtrusive hinges repair which preserves most of the original leather. Interior hinges cracked; binding else intact. Dampstaining to top margin of first few pages; these pages are also foxed, with the foxing continuing only sporadically throughout the volume.
