Description:
By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave, Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams. ***** First edition, first printing - one of a mere 750 copies. Original drab printed boards, uncut. Front cover printed askance. Small mark at the top of the front cover. Very light general wear. Light scattered foxing, but still quite internally clean. An otherworldly, unrepaired, Fine copy of a book not-oft found in boards and when it is, the spine is typically perished into oblivion. Chemised in custom red morocco gilt slipcase. Ex-libris Frederick W. Skiff and Estelle Doheny, legendary early 20th century book-collectors.*** Contains the first complete edition of Bryant's moving rhapsody on death, Thanatopsis, which is generally considered to be the first great poem written by an American: Thanatopsis, if not the best-known American poem abroad before the mid-19th century, certainly ranked near the top of the list, and at home school children were commonly required…

Description:
"Poems" contains Bryant's best-known work, "Thanatopsis," first published in the North American Review in 1817 and revised in 1821 for this collection. Our copy is in the original brown paper over boards. There is some rubbing to the author's name on the front cover affecting the letters ANT in Bryant. Years ago, the spine was covered wih a strip of white paper (now tanned beige). The lower half of this strip has come unglued, showing the worn brown paper underneath. A conservator could possibly remove the paper strip. Our research indicates few copies remain with the original spine intact. Our copy now rests in a red cloth-covered chemise, which is then enclosed in a similar red cloth slipcase. The slipcase has a leather spine with the title "Poems" and author's last name and publication date in gilt, and five raised bands, also gilded; however, the lower bands have lost or are losing the gilt. Book interior is in very good condition with pages tanned and scattered light foxing. No extraneous writing…

New York: E[lam] Bliss, 1832. First edition. 240 pp. 8vo. Publisher's muslin-backed boards, paper spine label. Light wear to covers, small snag to spine label, foxing to covers and sporadically to text, binding cracked at title-page, early ownership signature on front free endpaper. In a custom brown morocco-backed slipcase and chemise. First edition. 240 pp. 8vo. Bryant's third book, following the extremely rare self-published juvenalia Embargo (1808) and his slim first collection, Poems (1821). This edition contains works from the 1821 Poems - including "Thanatopsis" and "To a Waterfowl" - as well as newer poems. "Most of the following poems have been already printed ... In preparing them for press, [Bryant] has made such corrections as occurred to him on subjecting them to a careful revision" (Preface). Description:
John Snow; Edward Moxon; Charles Gilpin; William and Robert Chambers; John Wright, 1848. Hardcover. Good. A compilation of nine disparately published titles from various publishers (detailed below), which a previous owner bound together roughly contemporary to their publication. There is a list of each book inked at front paste down, dated 1848, only two years following the date of publication of the newest of these books, which so seems likely as the approximate date that the compilation was bound together. Black half-leather, marbled paper boards - scuffed, scratched, with heavy edgewear frayed to boards. Spine rebacked with a fairly unobtrusive hinges repair which preserves most of the original leather. Interior hinges cracked; binding else intact. Dampstaining to top margin of first few pages; these pages are also foxed, with the foxing continuing only sporadically throughout the volume. Contents listing inked to front paste down, with additional bibliographic note in heavy pencil at FFEP;…
