Description:
New York: British Information Services, 1945. 1st Edition. Paperback. The 12 June 1945 Statement printed here was made very near the end of Churchill's famous tenure as wartime Prime Minister. In July 1945 Churchill's Conservative Party would lose the General election and Labour's Clement Attlee would succeed Churchill. Here Prime Minister Churchill makes a statement to the House of Commons regarding communication with the Vichy French government in 1940. Apparently in the aftermath of victory in Europe former Vichy collaborators were making claims about the British government in attempts to defend themselves. Churchill opens his statement by explaining that the question of what negotiations took place in 1940 between the British and Vichy governments "should be answered in a way which will bring it to notice abroad". After a lengthy explanation, Churchill's statement ends with: "The reply I have made has a reference to proceedings which are taking place in France against certain individuals."… Read More

London: Conservative and Unionist Central Office, 1951. First edition. Pamphlet. This is the first edition, only printing of Churchill's first address to the British people after regaining the Office of Prime Minister. Having done so much to win the war, Churchill faced frustration of his postwar plans when his wartime government fell to Labour in the General Election of July 1945. He would remain Leader of the Opposition until the General Election of late October 1951, which returned the Conservative Party to Parliamentary majority and Churchill to Downing Street for his second and final Premiership at the age of 77. Churchill's first broadcast to the British people on the state of the nation took place 8 weeks after the election, on 22 December 1951. Here is the first edition, only printing of the pamphlet publication of this 20 minute broadcast speech. The pamphlet is notable not only for being the first broadcast address of Churchill's second premiership, but also for its striking, vivid… Read More

Baynard Press, August 1940. [Second World War] FIRST PRINTING. Slim pamphlet (25 x 16cm) pp.16. Grey card covers titled in dark red, bound with two staples. A touch of light spotting internally, with a black ink spot to lower fore-edge and back cover. Covers show moderate toning and spotting, with quite heavy oxidation to staples. Splits to spine fold; quite delicate. Very good. A Statement of War Aims; this is the historic address given by Churchill to the Commons, which summarises the second war against German aggression thus far, and touches on the relationship with, and the future role of, the United States in the war effort. The rousing speech is notable for the inclusion of praise for 'The Few', the outnumbered RAF Fighter Command personnel who repelled the might of the Luftwaffe during 'The Battle of Britain', being the first major air campaign to be fought entirely by air forces; "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few

Description:
Winnipeg: Universal Life Assurance and Annuity Company, 1941. Canadian edition. Pamphlet. This is a quite rare wartime speech pamphlet featuring Churchill's "Give us the tools and we will finish the job" speech of February 9, 1941. Churchill's speech is published here with one other - Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King's February 2, 1941 message broadcast to the people of Canada. On Saturday, February 8th, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Lend-Lease Bill by 260 to 165 Votes. It had yet to pass the Senate and be signed by President Roosevelt, but a major hurdle absolutely crucial to the British had been passed. Churchill learned of the welcome news at Chequers (the country residence of the British prime minister) and later that day received a farewell visit from Harry Hopkins, President Roosevelt's emissary and a critical advocate and shaper of the Lend Lease Program. Hopkins discussed with Churchill many points in this speech that Churchill would deliver the following evening, which… Read More

Description:
Canada: Winnipeg Free Press, Regina Leader-Post, Saskatoon Star-Phoenix, 1940. First edition, both individual and collective issues. Paperback. This is a collection of eight early Second World War pamphlets, each publishing British Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s speeches spanning 13 May 1940 to 12 November 1940. These pamphlets were published in Canada simultaneously by three Canadian newspapers on or about 13 December 1940. The newspapers were the Regina Leader-Post, Winnipeg Free Press, and Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. Each of the three newspapers put out their own edition in their respective cities at the same time. A week later, there was also a collective edition with all three newspapers listed as publishers together on the title page. In total, there were eight variations – each of the four publication issues bound in both yellow and green wraps, and orange and green wraps. As may be imagined, it is almost prohibitively challenging to assemble all eight different issues. Here is a full set… Read More

Stamford Connecticut: The Overbrook Press, 1943. Limited Edition. Hardcover. This handsome and scarce limited edition of Churchill's 19 May 1943 address to the U.S. Congress was produced for Members of Congress by Frank Altschuls Overbrook Press. This was Churchill's second address to Congress, seventeen long months of war having passed in the interval since his first, just after Pearl Harbor. Churchill's address came days after the Allies' critical victory in North Africa. Condition is very good minus. The black paper-covered boards are only lightly scuffed and blemished. The red front cover label remains bright, clean, and fully intact. The contents show almost no spotting and no previous ownership marks. We note customary transfer browning to the endsheets from the pastedown glue. A faint, unobtrusive moisture stain affects a maximum area of roughly 3 inches wide by .75 inches deep of the upper left margins through p.12. Light spotting appears confined to the inner blank margins at p.12-13… Read More

Description:
London: His Majesty's Stationery Office (H.M.S.O.), The Baynard Press, 1940. First edition. Pamphlet. This is the first edition, only printing of one of Churchill's most famous speeches. Churchill's speech to Parliament of August 20th, 1940 was occasioned in part by the Battle of Britain and famously honored the RAF pilots who almost single-handedly prevented Nazi invasion of England. Printed deep red on light gray paper wraps and wire stitched, this speech pamphlet measures 9.75 inches x 6 inches (24.8 x 15.2 cm) and is 16 pages in length. Given the fragility of the edition, most copies understandably suffer from significant wear, soiling, tanning, and spotting. This is an unusually well-preserved copy in very good plus condition. The gray paper wraps are complete, without evident toning, with no vertical or horizontal creasing, and firmly attached, both original binding staples still intact and showing only the slightest hint of corrosion. The wraps show only quite mild soiling and spotting and… Read More

London: His Majesty’s Stationery Office, 1940. First Thus (Cohen A131.1) (Woods A60a). Pamphlet. Very Good. 9 7/8 x 6 inches (16 pages). “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.” Churchill’s iconic speech celebrating victory in the “Battle of Britain” has become quite scarce in this handsomely produced, First Pamphlet Printing, by His Majesty’s Stationery Office. This is a far better than average copy, with covers that are complete and barely faded at all, though lightly wrinkled, with some faint edge-toning, front and rear. The contents are fine and unfoxed. Increasingly rare thus.

Description:
Admiralty House, London, 1940. Letter. This compellingly interesting item features two pieces of correspondence from early in the Second World War. The first is a typed, signed letter from then-First Lord of the Admiralty Winston S. Churchill – just 10 days before he became wartime Prime Minister – to German-Jewish journalist and émigré Alfred J. Fischer declining an appointment to meet. The letter is accompanied by the original Admiralty envelope. The second typed letter is signed by Churchill’s Private Secretary, John Peck, dated 8 June 1940, on 10 Downing Street stationery, addressing an apparent request to make inquiries into “the case of Mr. Fischer”. Together, these two pieces of early Second World War correspondence are noteworthy for occurring during Churchill’s ascendance to the premiership, for featuring his signature on his Admiralty stationery in his final days as First Lord, and limning the fraught, perilous fate of German Jews, even those who made it to supposed haven on Allied… Read More

Description:
London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1929. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a remarkable association copy of the penultimate volume of Winston S. Churchill’s history of the First World War. This jacketed first edition, first printing of The Word Crisis: The Aftermath is inscribed and dated to Arthur James Balfour, the man who replaced Churchill as First Lord of the Admiralty in 1915 when Churchill was forced to resign. Churchill’s own words testify most eloquently to his association with Balfour, which both included and exceeded that of a colleague, mentor, or rival: “…this remarkable man whom I knew, and whose friendship, across the vicissitudes of politics, I enjoyed in a ripening measure during thirty years.” (Churchill, Great Contemporaries, p.240) The inscription Churchill inscribed this presentation copy of the first edition, first printing, first state of The Aftermath six days prior to publication.
