Numerous engravings throughout text, but all is greatly enhanced by several pages of handwritten notes and treatment recipes to early and late blanks, and a diverse selection of newspaper cuttings tipped in. Practical advice on dealing with foot and mouth on fep (and destruction of wasps' nests) gives way to a recipe to "bring back the hair on the knees or elsewhere" alas, marked "for a horse only". Text proper is a little toned with occasional minor marking, but in general good order. Half leather with marbled paper, heavily worn with loss to spine and tape remnants from hinge strengthening, rendering the volume, let's say characterful (or shabby), but not unattractive. Very good. A product of the partnership between the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge and William Youatt, accomplished veterinarian and animal researcher whose influence reached Darwin. The SDUK (1826-1848) was a project implemented by Whig politician Henry Brougham to publish cheap educational texts for the working/middle class reader. This book comes from their Farmers Series, and covers the horse's general history, anatomy, behavioural instincts, and proper management.

He was educated for the ministry, and in 1810 left Devonshire and moved to London. In 1812 or 1813 he joined a veterinary practice in London,apprenticing with the veterinarian, who was not a graduate of the Royal Veterinary College and therefore not registered. Because of this, when Youatt enrolled in the College at almost 40 years of age, he was summarily dismissed without a diploma. He remained a partner in this practice, where,after 12 years the business passed into his hands. Brown covers in well used condition with corners having open wear. Some time in the past this book was repaired with heavy brown tape to keep covers together as the spine is completely missing. This tape goes about an inch or two onto the front and rear covers and has dried and separated from front cover. Previous owner resided in Dryden NY. Several front and rear pages are in bad condition as some are partially or completely separated. Having edge roll or tear, etc. Most of the text is still quite clean/shaky with nothing other what has been previously mentioned falling apart. No athor's name can be found however Wm. Youatt has been mentioned in other books abount the same age.
