The Sakuteiki, or "Records of Garden Making," was written nearly 1000 years ago, making it the oldest work on Japanese gardening; in fact, the oldest book on gardening in the world! In this edition of the Sakuteiki, the authors provide both an English-language translation of this classic work; and an introduction to the cultural and historical context that led to the development of Japanese gardening. A Japanese court noble wrote the Sakuteiki during the Heian period (794-1184). During this critical era in Japanese history cultural influences on poetry, clothing-and gardening-that had been imported from China and Korea over the previous centuries were reexamined and reinterpreted into their unique Japanese forms. "Honest and reliable service - every book hand-packaged with care."
The Tokaido -- the name of this highway today epitomizes a golden age of Japan's past. This "Eastern Sea Road", which connected the emperor's capital in Kyoto and the seat of the shogun's administration in Edo (now Tokyo) was heavily traveled in all seasons; the numerous prints and guidebooks about the Tokaido represent the time of prosperity and peace when even the average citizen could undertake the adventure of travel along this highway. It was Hiroshige who immortalized the Tokaido. In the famous prints of the fifty-three stages reproduced in this book, this master artist of the ukiyo-e print captured the beauty, romance, adventure, mystery, and joy - all the myriad and glowing facets of the people and places, in all seasons and times of day, of the Tokaido highway. Hiroshige's… Read More

From flyleaf: Between the years 1814 and 1878 there was published in Japan a series of woodblock printed volumes entitled Hokusai Manga, or Hokusai's Sketches from Life, which was destined to be one of the most popular art publications ever issued anywhere in the world. With its rich tapestry of life as it was lived in the boisterous Tokyo of the day and its magical evocation of the beauties of the Japanese countryside, it was an immediate best-seller in Japan, and then, upon the West's discovery of Japanese art, went on to win the hearts of people everywhere. It is from this amazing book, amazing both in execution and breadth of scope, that the… Read More

Description:
Very good Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada IIDepicting a rather unusual scene from a Kabuki play with two actors holding up another actor as though he were a puppet in a Bunraku play.
Nakamura Fukusuke I is paraded like a Puppet of Yaoya Hanbei by two supporting actors Arashi Kangoro I as Yoshida Kango (right), and Nakamura Kangoro I as Yoshida Kanta (left).
The play is Na Nomi Yaoya Ryori no Futsutsuka, from Wakaki no Ume Satomi no Yatsufusa.
Published by Hayashiya Shogoro in Tokyo in Ansei 4 of the Edo Era (1857).
Utagawa Kunisada II (1823-1880) was a Japanese ukiyo-e print maker and head of the Utagawa school. He worked in many genres including theatre actors (yakusha-e), beauty pictures (bijinga), erotica (shunga), literary scenes. He never achieved the level of success of his master.
Good impression with deep colour and rich black, slight age toning to the paper.
On verso, four adhesive stains to the bottom and top edges from a previous mount easily covered if matted. Small mark in… Read More

The art of ukiyo-e (the floating world) originated in the city of Edo (16031867, now Tokyo), when the political and military power of Japan was in the hands of the shoguns. Comprising six essays, six plate sections and over 600 illustrations this beautiful book provides a perfect introduction to the art of this period. The paintings, scrolls and prints reproduced here demonstrate not only the new urban pleasures of the theatre, restaurants, teahouses and geisha, but also Japans love of nature and tradition. Professor Calzas accessible style provides a fascinating yet scholarly study of such masters as Hokusai, Hiroshige and Utamaro.

The growing appreciation of Japanese Art and architecture in the West has extended to the Japanese way with flowers. This book is intended as a complete introduction to Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement. Beginning with the history and development of the art, and its place in Japanese culture, we introduce the reader to the eleven basic styles. Next comes a large section devoted to vases, materials, tools, and methods. Text and pictures explain how to keep flowers fresh, how to select and prepare both fresh and dried materials, and how to make the most effective use of them. Twelve lessons in creating arrangements in the moibana style follow. I have tried to make this the most carefully detailed and profusely… Read More
