24 pp.Only copy located of a memento book for the occasion of the marriage of Silvestro Michele Arnolfini and Beatrice Luisa Bernardini, both from noble families that had been prominent in Lucca since the 16th century. The present copy is bound in red velvet with gold and silver embroidery and brocade paper endpapers, no doubt for the bride and groom. The text is a dramatic composition in verse to be sung at the wedding, with a 4-page introduction where the priest-author speaks of music and poetry, but also takes the opportunity to provide moral advice while flattering the bride and groom. Very slightly and evenly browned and with minor wear to the corners of the binding, with the book and binding in very good condition. A monumental tribute to the RAF pilots of the Second World War, signed by 50 airmen First editions, deluxe signed issues, both volumes number 5 of 401 copies, each containing 25 superb colour silhouette portraits of distinguished RAF pilots from Britain and the Commonwealth, all signed by both the pilot and artist Michael Pierce, and with his embossed stamp. This set handsomely presented in the rare mahogany display cabinet and with a fine provenance. Although unmarked as such this set is from the library of Air Vice Marshal Freddie Hurrell (1928-2008), one of the creative team; he is pictured and named on the original prospectus, present here with each volume. Hurrell had been Director General of RAF Medical Services (1986-8) and upon retirement in 1988, after 35 years' service with the RAF, became Director of Appeals for the RAF Benevolent Fund. Wells", with the recipient's embroidered silk bookmark laid in. The recipient was Wells's friend and fellow writer, the author of the enduring "The Monkey's Paw", which is frequently anthologized and studied alongside Wells's "The Moth". Despite being left-wing in his youth, Jacobs described his political opinions in later years as "conservative and individualistic", and he was on friendly terms with Wells, despite openly disdaining his politics. Although W. W. Jacobs's popularity has fallen in contrast to that of Wells, at one time only Kipling commanded a higher price for short fiction in The Strand Magazine. Although here called “San Torello”, he was beatified in the 18th century but has not been canonized. Accounts of his miracles saving small children led people to treat him as a patron of pregnant women (pp. 3-12), with directions for a nine-day exercise for pregnant women to invoke a fortunate pregnancy, with a mediation devoted to San Torello on pp. 13-30. On pp. 31-34 is a responsory in verse, to be recited at the tomb of San Torello, followed by a method to invoke the mediation of San Torello, some citations from the Bible and short prayers (pp. 35-39).Very good copy in a beautiful contemporary embroidered binding.l Not in KVK; WorldCat.

Magnificent contemporary English binding finely worked on a hazelnut silk background and embroidered with silver and gold wires and wires coloured in red and various shades of green. The binding features decorated ornaments, in the middle of each covers there is a beautiful embroidered panel that contains a detailed image of a blessing figure holding an anchor in one hand – probably representing 'Hope' – and on the other cover a figure with a cross in one hand and in the other hand a page – probably representing 'Faith'; on the spine, ornamental drawings and hourglasses.

This is the author's most famous work, in which he "offered a robust critique of the belief in witchcraft, appealing to reason and invoking sarcasm to make his case that the power of witches was illusory" (ODNB). The work is significant as one of few such open and plainly-stated attacks on the belief in witchcraft at this date. John Wagstaffe (c.1633-1677) was a noted Oxford wit, known in London in the free-thought circles around the inns of court, and a "pioneering critic of commonplace witchcraft beliefs" (Hunter, p. 47).
